A Day In The Life Of Harriet Duggan Intern

When I arrive at apt in the morning, I have usually encountered quite a lot in my day already. Once I am up, dressed and fed I leave my house at 7.45 for my hourly commute to the office. With it being peak harvest and bailing season for farmers at the moment, whilst driving from my home in a village on the Welsh border, I usually find myself doing 20mph on a main road on more than one occasion during my journey! This is something I find extremely annoying, but as my brother (who actually does a lot of farming) keeps telling me, “Don’t live in the countryside then!”

As I step in the office, I am always greeted with “hellos” and “mornings” from my colleagues who are always bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, (most mornings anyway!). This week is the fifth out of my eight week internship here at apt and there really isn’t a more suitable expression to use than “time flies when you’re having fun”.  As an intern, I didn’t know what to expect - I kind of imagined that maybe I would be doing some research, perhaps some paperwork and making a lot of tea. How could I have been more wrong? When I came to meet the team, Managing Director Angie made it very clear that I really would be thrown in at the deep end. She told me that I would be working with real live clients and actually be responsible for jobs and tasks which really mattered in the company! This was a daunting thought! “Am I going to be able to do things right? What if I mess up? Am I going to know what to do!? I don’t even have my degree yet”... These were just a few of the things that were going through my mind in the run up to starting my internship.

Five weeks on, and today, here I am in the office writing press releases, creating case studies, writing blogs and managing social media for clients, just to name a few - all things I have been doing since day one! I can’t believe I was so nervous about handling all the tasks. Everyone here has been fantastic mentors to me; I’ve had extensive feedback on all the work I’ve done which has gone on to help me produce better pieces next time.

There are several rounds of teas and coffees that happen throughout the day, with staff alternating on who makes it! I find Becky’s tea the most challenging to make as she likes her tea “milky”, having been taught by my Yorkshire mother how to make tea, I tend to make quite a strong cuppa - so making tea “milky” was another completely new experience here!

Every day here at apt is filled with something completely different to the last! No matter how much pressure the office is under, nobody stops smiling!
