A Day In The Life Of Ruth Butler Accounts Administrator

I have worked for apt marketing & pr since 2005, with a small break in 2007 to have my daughter. I joined as a marketing executive and loved having the varied contact with suppliers and clients. When I returned after my maternity leave I moved to the accounts role supplying administration support to the then accountant.

A typical day starts for me at 6.30am, if not earlier, as I am woken by my 7 year old daughter. Breakfast is made and munched while I get ready for work and she gets ready for school. The walk to school helps clear my head and the blast of fresh air the British weather provides helps blow any final sleep out of our eyes. Once she is safely in school, its back home for me and off to work.

I always have a to-do list prepared from the day before, but there are days when something will come in from ‘left-field’ needing actioned immediately so all plans get put on hold. That is what I love about working for apt, we all muck in when we need to - the team spirit always shines through.

My role has developed over the years. In addition to the administration of the accounts, I now manage the daily finances with the MD , reporting to the management team and so minimising our reliance on the external accountant. This is as a result of my completion of three years study, resulting in my Level 4 AAT accountancy qualification this summer.

I still deal with suppliers and clients having different types of conversations as I had before. I have the back up of a great accountant for any questions I cannot answer and deal with any queries from the bank. My part time hours allow me to leave so I make it home for the ‘school pick-up’, but if I am still needed the team know where to find me.

After nine years I still walk through the door in the morning not knowing what I will find because there is never a dull day and never a day the same at apt.
