Blood Swept Lands And Seas Of Red 888246 Handmade Poppies Flood The Moat Surrounding The Tower Of Lo

Something utterly breath-taking has caught our eye here at apt this week. To mark the First World War Centenary 888,246 handmade ceramic poppies have been placed around the Tower of London, one-by-one by a team of 150 volunteers. This outstanding display dedicates one poppy to each British and Colonial soldier who fell during World War I. Officially unveiled on 5th August, the striking art installation resembles poppies pouring out of the tower in a ‘Rapunzle’ style fashion and flowing in to the moat.

The Tower of London saw Crawford Butler, the longest serving Yeoman Warden, plant the first ceramic poppy. Planting of the poppies will continue until November 11, Armistice Day when the last poppy will be symbolically planted.

Ceramic artist Paul Cummins and stage designer Tom Piper are the artistic minds behind this wonder. This project was bigger than ever and took over 50 people working together to make nearly a million poppies needed for this occasion. The installations name, Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red, also comes from ceramic artist Paul.

Today is the national day of commemoration, events in London, Glasgow and Belgium will mark the start of the beginning Government-led remembrance program which will last for four years, ending on the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day.

Everyone here at apt thinks this is a astonishing way to mark the 100th Anniversary of World War I by really reminding people of what remembrance day is really all about. It draws the country right back to where it all began and remembers those who never returned. The country is being asked to switch off lights and burn a single candle from 10pm – 11pm tonight, 100 years since it was announced Britain would be joining the war. We’ll have our lights out, will you?
