Flappy Bird is this year’s most talked about app after it was involved in a 28 day period of phenomenal fame before it was surprisingly removed at the end of last month; accumulating a staggering 50 million downloads in its short lifetime and even receiving a digital memorial celebration. Its closure came after creator Dong Nguyen couldn’t deal with the project anymore stating it "ruins my simple life".
It’s fair to say the app turned into a huge craze. People went to extraordinary lengths to get their finger tips on the app including attempting to purchase second hand iPhones on eBay with the app installed. Although hopes were cut short after fans discovered that all phones need to be restored to factory settings before they can be sold on eBay.
However a month on from its abrupt removal from the app store and Flappy Bird looks set to be reincarnated by Mr Dong, who publically stated on social media network site Twitter that the app was set to return in the future. Dong insisted the game will not be like the original but ‘better’ revealing “It will not be the original game but a better one. I keep my word.”
Behind the scenes this could be seen as a very well put together PR stunt by the Flappy Bird creator whose strategy helped the app become an overnight success. The ability to create an enormous buzz around a product, only to suddenly then restrict demand by deleting the app, has allowed Dong to launch a new version of the app which will no doubt be supported by more PR and an increased price tag.
For Flappy Bird enthusiasts this is likely to be a welcome return as fans were left disappointed after not being able to download the app. The question remains as to whether people will gain as much joy with the new format as they did with the old.
