Leavers Blog By Harriet Duggan

Harriet joined us for an 8 week internship during her summer after finishing her second year of university, and here's how she got on during the two months... [all copy sic]

8 weeks ago I was preparing my first packed lunch in seven years, with my pencil case and note pad ready in my bag, about to embark on a new and exciting adventure for the rest of my summer break.

When I arrived at apt I had no idea what to expect, however I was a little nervous as Angie had warned me that she would be quite proudly, throwing me in at the deep end.

For the average student, when they start an internship their first task normally consists of something along the lines of filing, or paperwork... not here at apt!

The first task that was given to me was to design and make a media pack for a festival called Lakefest. I didn’t even know what a media pack was! I presumed this was something I should know, so, trying to hide my embarrassment I did what any first-day intern does and started asking questions. I picked up on things pretty quickly and in a few days I had produced a media pack, full of information for press about the festival! It was such a delight knowing that something I’d written, chosen the font and colour, and even designed the layout for was going to be the final piece that would be used at the festival!

From there on I was off, and it has been non-stop ever since. I’ve been drafting and sending press releases, pulling together press lists, writing blogs, articles and even case-studies. Working with real-life clients has been a great opportunity as I’ve realised how everything I do can affect something else if it isn’t done properly. What I do can actually make or lose money for either apt or the client!

Every day has been something completely different to the next which has made this experience so exciting. It has taken me to the next level and I feel 100% prepared to take on the final year of my degree. Being independent and reliable for my own work has helped me in so many ways. I feel at such an advantage having these 8 weeks under my belt on my return to university.

My progress here at apt wouldn’t be if it wasn’t for all the feedback I’ve had off the team. It was such a confidence booster when someone in the office commented on how they could see a real improvement in the press releases I’d been writing. The help and guidance along the way has been endless and a huge help to me, I just hope I’ve given enough back in return!

I’m so grateful I’ve had the chance to work on some really great events and projects, including Lakefest and Pretty Bald - which I wish Victoria the best of luck with. Her drive and determination is a real inspiration to others, including myself.

I've learnt so much from the place as a whole but everyone has taught me valuable things individually also. Not only have I learnt, but I’ve had a cracking time along the way, filled with cakes, coffee, laughs and smiles! Time really does fly when you’re having fun

I cannot wait to step back in to education and apply all my real-life experience back in to learning, with a completely new and different outlook on marketing and pr

Thank you everyone, so much!
