The Key To Englands Success At This Summers World Cup By Stephen Hawking

It’s been a long time since England last won the World Cup, 48 years to be precise, with many a manager taking to the throne, only to be knocked of their perch by failure in their quest for world football’s most prestigious trophy.

It’s becoming an all too familiar sentiment; the feeling that this will be our year, having our nation proudly engraved for a second time on the trophy but only to get stopped in our tracks by Brazil and most recently bitter rivals Germany.

Fear not England fans, not all hope is lost as Irish Bookmakers, Paddy Power, teamed up with Professor Stephen Hawking earlier this week to unveil their ‘pre-World Cup campaign’ in a packed London press conference at the Savoy hotel.

The campaign wittingly named ‘Hawking Talking’ is exactly what it says on the tin. The ever fantastic Professor Stephen Hawking attended on the bookmakers behalf to give an insight into how Roy Hodgson’s squad can succeed at this summer’s tournament, which you can view here;

The theoretical physicist was asked to lead a study into the science of England’s World Cup performances’. His findings were rather interesting, so we picked out our three favourites;

  • Temperature: Temperate climates are best. A 5⁰C rise in temperature is expected to reduce England’s chances of winning by 59% (bodes well for Brazil)
  • Formation: A confident 4-3-3 has a success rate of 58% compared to 48% when playing 4-4-2.
  • Nationality of referee: European referees give England the best chance of success. 63% of games are won with a European referee compared to 38% when the referee is from elsewhere.

It goes without saying that in recent months Paddy Power has been rather controversial with their PR activity, most notably on former Manchester United manager David Moyes. However this stunt, using international treasure Stephen Hawking, shows a much lighter and PR friendly approach. It’ll be interesting to see how Paddy Power position themselves over the next coming weeks and throughout the world cup, but one thing is for sure, they’ll no doubt get some fantastic exposure!
