APT Academy - Mara West

When you enter a work experience placement and the first question you get asked is “Do you like dogs?”, you know it’s going to be a good week.

When you enter a work experience placement and the first question you get asked is “Do you like dogs?”, you know it’s going to be a good week. When you hear the second question, “Do you drink tea?”, you know it’s going to be a great week.

I started the week just keen to gain any experience of a PR and marketing environment, eager to help out with little jobs where I could, but soon learnt that I’d be given responsibility to take on much more. From creating content for clients to learning how the ‘back-end’ of a website works, I’ve been encouraged to try my hand out at everything.

The team in the office couldn’t have made me more welcome; in addition to the endless offers of tea (always appreciated), there was loads of advice, offers of help and words of encouragement passed my way. By offering me the chance to try out a bit of everything, I’ve been able to dip in and out of different projects and pick up loads of different skills throughout the week that I know will come in handy in the future.

Though trying to type with one hand on the keyboard and one hand on a dog’s tummy has proven to be a challenge at times, the week overall has been extremely rewarding, and I couldn’t recommend APT more to anyone considering work experience in a marketing environment.
