Christmas shopping wouldn’t be the same without the Christmas songs and decorations around the shops and restaurants, but it’s important for businesses to get their festive decisions right.
Costa Coffee has taken the decision to ban the range of Christmas songs that shoppers hate the most, and have enlisted Youth Music, a national children’s charity, to revamp the traditional, more popular songs, for their customers in selected stores this month.
Costa gathered a list of the ‘Top 10 most hated Christmas songs’ which include The Beach Boys – Little Saint Nick, Paul McCartney – Wonderful Christmas and topping the list was Sir Cliff Richard – Mistletoe and Wine.
Festive advertising is often the most anticipated of the year, with consumers waiting to see window displays, Christmas lights switch on and the array of adverts including Coca Cola and John Lewis – all that wouldn’t be the same without their backing song or jingle. Bands and artists can generate significant profits and royalties if successful; for example Slade earn £500,000 every Christmas in royalties for their “Merry Christmas Everyone” song, and the easily recognisable “It’s Christmas” line from Noddy Holder. It’s not surprising that music producers such as Simon Cowell try to influence the fought over Christmas Number 1 spot through the timing of the X factor final!
Here at apt we’ve taken our own poll of our favourite Christmas songs and our worst, here’s our top 5 of each:
