With the sporting calendar for 2014 packed to include the World Cup and the Winter Olympics, Gillette is helping us get into the sporting buzz by using favourites Roger Federer and Lionel Messi in their latest advert. Gillette has devised a creative advert that offers an aspect for almost every sporting fan and nation.
Gillette is well known for using a vast number of celebrity endorsements in their promotional campaigns over the years and has included a number of popular athletes to attract their young, male target audience including; David Beckham, Thierry Henry and Matt Ryan.
In ‘The centre for superior athletes’ Federer and Messi each pick from a stand of 12 razors representing 12 different nations.
Keeping up with its humorous nature, Gillette’s advert shows Federer and Messi participating in different sporting activities based on the nation of the razor they pick up. Highlights for us include the tennis champion as a Sumo Wrestler (Japan) and football ace as an ice hockey player.
The last two razors taken are Brazil and Argentina leading to feature Federer as a goalkeeper and Messi in his usual Striker position. As part of their new #InnerSteel campaign, we think that this is a brilliant light-hearted advert showing the fun side of sport. The key to a great marketing campaign is to leave the watcher talking about it after – and this advert has definitely left us debating whether Messi managed to beat Federer to the back of the net!
