Get Your Brochures And Flyers Noticed

Research by the Direct Marketing Association shows that 79% of people keep, pass on, read or glance at leaflets and flyers delivered directly to them. Leaflets and flyers are proven to be one of the best, and the most cost effective, types of advertising you can use. Correct distribution is key to making them work for you.

An effective, but relatively expensive, way to ensure your leaflets are seen is by engaging a leaflet distribution company to drop your flyers individually – called a solo drop. You can specify particular areas, right down to individual streets and types of buildings, ensuring your flyer hits an accurate demographic. If you go for a slightly cheaper shared drop, your flyer will be delivered with other companies’ flyers; do make sure your contract specifies these will be of a non competitive nature.

Depending on the products and services you are advertising, targeting businesses rather than residential households may be more productive so you may want to specify distribution only to trading estates or retail parks. Ask a local cafe, sports centre, doctor’s surgery etc. to stock your brochure if you offer a complimentary service - a gym stocking leaflets for a local health food shop and vice versa.

There’s also the option to distribute your leaflets or flyers inside local newspapers or magazines, which will offer this service in addition to advertising with them. This ensures a high volume of drops, though you are not in control of which households receive the publication and a nested flyer may have less impact – it’s easier to miss.

Another way to get your flyers out there of course is to thrust them right into the hands of potential customers! You or your staff are then on hand to give a sales pitch or answer questions – and hopefully engage with people – and if you are wearing a T-shirt with your brand on it, all the better! Target busy shopping centres and high streets at the weekend or lunchtime, be outside public transport hubs during commuter rush hours, hand out your flyers at popular shows, festivals, sports events and other special occasions. What about where people are likely to be impatiently waiting in long queues? By relieving their boredom your message just may be received more warmly!

Once you’ve distributed your leaflets and flyers, make sure you keep track of the response rate from customers. This can be achieved in many ways, such as:

• Including a special offer for a limited time only
• Featuring a buy one, get one free or money off discount coupon
• Inviting customers to complete a survey or registration process that asks them “where did you hear about us?”
• Monitoring any increase in the number of phone calls, e-mails, web visits or pop-in customers in the days following your leaflet or flyer going out

This will help you fine-tune any future promotions. Don’t forget that people also put leaflets and flyers aside and keep them safe until they have a need for your particular product or service.
