Footballing superstar Cristiano Ronaldo scores yet another TV spot in the latest advertising drive by US sporting brand Nike. The Real Madrid forward is seen wearing the new Mercurial Vapor IX football boots as he tears apart the stadium, literally blowing away fans, players, coaching staff, officials and even riot police who are all left devastated by Ronaldo’s vapor trail of carnage.
The Wieden + Kennedy created advert is shot in slow motion and uses a brilliant collaboration of Spanish and Portuguese music to compliment the changing pace of editing used. The advert is thus transformed from what was initially a fantastic spectacle, to the fast, adrenalin rush visuals that we have become accustomed to experiencing from previous Nike advertising.
At apt we think that Nike’s latest advert featuring the strapline “Be Fast. Be Mercurial.” is perhaps one of the most cinematically astute we’ve seen from the mega-brand; it appears to still retain its values of playfulness that we’ve seen in previous years, such as the ingenious Joga Bonito campaign and the legendary ‘The Cage Tournament’ advert that inspired footballing freestylers across the globe.
