It’s always frustrating when your mobile phone breaks, and it costs less to buy a completely new phone than it does to fix the broken piece. People also want different things out of a phone; some want the best camera, more memory or simply a longer battery life.
Well, Dave Hakkens has created a new concept that allows each user to uniquely customise their phone to use only the parts they desire the most; responding more like Lego than a Smartphone.
Phonebloks, as the name would suggest, is a mobile phone made up of blocks held together by two miniature screws. The blocks can be replaced to fix breakages, include the latest upgrade, or just so you can customise the phone to include more / less features, e.g. more memory, better camera, etc...
The main benefit of Phonebloks is that it aims to reduce landfill waste by partly removing the need to throw away phones that can be fixed. The campaign doesn’t involve cash; they simply want you to show that you are interested in the idea. Using Thunderclap, tweets and Facebook posts, Phonebloks aims to raise awareness of their innovation whilst demonstrating their social responsibility and engagement.
The multi-platform campaign, “Show the world we want a phone worth keeping #Phonebloks”, will be scheduled on October 29th 2013 to kick-off the campaign. Currently it has received over 300,000 supporters, so with just 45 days left, will you help spread the word for ‘a phone worth keeping’?
