The Natgeo Photography Competition

The National Geographic Traveller photography shortlist was blown away with submissions of travelling snaps, all hoping to make it into the Winners Gallery this February. The Judges had to shortlist all of the submitted photography into separate categories including, Action, Animal, River, People and had to critique specific techniques required in amongst the categories and with some stunning submissions and we just had to share a few of our favourites with you!

The Action category has some beautifully shot imagery caught just at the right moment; from an exhilarating train ride in Sri Lanka with the foreground out of focus exampling the speed in which the train is travelling, to a contrasted shot of two old friends sat on a pier whilst the power of Mother Nature’s waves tear around a distant lighthouse.

The Animal category had interesting interpretations of the animal kingdom; from a beautifully contrasted portrait of a Snakebird located in Florida capturing the elegance of the wildlife to a dramatic full colour image of Bengal Tiger.

The People category truly captures cultural celebrations from all around the world. From thousands of Santa-attired part goers in London, to a rural farmer smiling proudly outside his Tanzania home.

We think that all of the imagery captured is fantastic and portray the variety of categories beautifully; we would like to congratulate all the nominees who made it onto the Shortlist and as the Winners were announced earlier this week we’d like to congratulate:

  • Action: Sri Lankan Train Journey by Yanick Targonski
  • Animal: Falkland Island Penguins by Barry Robertson
  • People: The New Yeara Ritual by Alecsandra Raluca Dragoi
  • River: River of Ice by Claire Carter
  • Rural: The World’s Biggest Cave by Chris Miller
  • Urban: St Paul Cathedral by Philip Braude

Take a look at their winning photography snaps here... and don’t forget to have a look at the shortlist photography too!
