Thinking Outside Of The Text Book By Emma Smith

4 months ago I walked sheepishly through the doors of the apt office, ready to start my first day of work under the title ‘marketing assistant’. Having just completed my first year of university, I initially thought I had gained quite a solid understanding of the basic principles of marketing. Quite truthfully though, as I walked through the office doors on that first day, I didn’t have a clue about what to expect, and I soon discovered that there is much more to marketing than one might think.

I was very warmly welcomed by the entire team, and within the first hour of my arrival, I found myself sat face-to-face with one of the company’s existing clients, working with her on a live website. Since that day I have been presented with and sometimes challenged by various other tasks; my favourites of which have included working on client emailers alongside Victoria, and developing my blogging skills with the help and encouragement of Kalli. The numerous different projects I have had the chance to work on during my time at apt have provided me with the kind of experience no amount of text books, research or assignments could have ever prepared me for!

Working at apt has allowed me to see the way in which a marketing agency functions, and I’m also grateful to Angela and Kalli for introducing me to the world of PR. I have also been able to apply what I’ve learnt throughout the first year of my degree and working at apt has definitely reinforced my ambition to work within the industry. Therefore I would like to say a big thank you to Angie for giving me this opportunity and to the rest of the team who have helped me along the way, especially Victoria who has passed on so much of her knowledge. I have met some lovely people here and have had a lot of fun and am saddened to be leaving!
