Welcome To Apts Annual April Fools Ceremony

When it comes to pranking, it doesn’t come any better than this. Yesterday, businesses all over the world indulged in April fools antics, which led to a whole heap of hilarious communicational tactics and advertisements being showcased from YouTube to the national press. Therefore, with it now being the 2nd we thought that we’d share our favorites with you. Let the round-up of 2013 best April fool pranks begin.

1. Google – The outright winners of this year’s apt Aprils fool’s awards ceremony has to be search engine giant Google (big round of applause). After putting together a whole April fool’s campaign, spreading across a wide range of their services, Google deservedly hit the top spot. Creations such as Google Nose Beta, the new ‘scentsation’ in search engines, which lets you search based on scents around the concept of ‘Smell-o-vision’; allowing consumers to search for smells that are held within the 15 million ‘scentabite’ database.

Google didn’t stop there though; following the discovery of the long lost maps of notorious pirate William 'Captain' Kidd during an underwater exhibition, Google found that the map contained a variety of encrypted symbols which were not easily decipherable. Google was crying out for help to decipher these symbols and find Captain Kidd’s treasures; therefore with Google state of the art technology they’ve digitized the map and make it accessible to everyone creating Google Treasure Maps. This was a very innovative approach to an April fools ploy and here at apt we like to celebrate these achievements…congratulations Google!

Finally, Google’s YouTube declares that all along the video sharing website has actually been an elaborate competition since 2005, searching to find the Best Video Ever created. We are so excited to hear that the winner will be announced soon, well maybe not that soon. According to the staff at YouTube the site will shut down for 10 years and be re-launched in 2023, In order for all the videos to be judged. Entries will no longer be accepted and the winner will walk away with a MP3 player and $500 towards their next viral creation. Only kidding, it’s only another one of Google’s impressive April fools jokes. YouTube is still up and running so don’t worry people, you’ll be entertained for a little while longer yet.

2. BMW – It would seem with the Royal baby due this year, BMW wants first dibs on offering them a pram. So before you think I’m crazy, let me introduce to you the latest edition to BMW’s product range. Fitted with a Nurse-Assisting Petrol Powered Injection Engine (N.A.P.P.I.E) and award-winning Efficient Dynamics technologies; including active aerodynamics and low rolling-resistance tires for those who are ‘too posh to push’, let me announce to you BMW’s P.R.A.M. (Postnatal Royal Auto Mobile). With a choice of two or four-wheel drive, it rides as smoothly on the polo field as it does down the Mall so you’d be in for a pleasurable ride. Available exclusively in Princess Pink and Royal Blue, this soft-top convertible is the latest innovation from the Forschunges und Narren division.  The BMW P.R.A.M comes complete with air conditioning and paparazzi-proof hood as standard.  So, we want to know, would you buy this? For all you pregnant ladies, is this the dream car for you? We feel this deserves the list for its royal thinking and creativeness with the design. Check it out

3. Virgin – Richard Branson is always one to be ambitious, but his latest invention is one to behold. How would you like to be guaranteed a window seat on a plane? Sounds lovely right? Well, let me re-phrase that for you. How would you like to spend a plane journey with a view of the world below your feet? Scary huh! Well, yesterday Virgin launched the world’s first bottomless plane that was set to give flyers an experience they’ve never had before. The virgin website states “The new aircraft will offer every passenger the chance of a bird's eye view with an extra special opportunity to look down on the beautiful scenery of Great Britain as they fly”. This is crafty innovation by the virgin team and we celebrate this by short listing them in our awards. It’s an incredible thought and we’d like to hear from you!

4. LELO (IKEA) - If IKEA or in this case, I should say ‘LELO’ made sex toys… This would be it. Gasm is the new eco-friendly vibrator that is made out of 100% recyclable material that aims to offer ladies a ‘greener vibe’. With compressed wood pulp and recycled rubber, this new product is an evolution in the sex toy industry and is sure to grab the attention of girls worldwide. A video on the company's website demonstrates how to assemble the eco-friendly 'personal massager', but bafflingly, there are no options to actually buy the thing until April 1st. Is it me or does this now sound a bit fishy? With a retail price of £120, this is aimed at the more luxury end of the market.  Unfortunately, I’m about to break your hearts by saying that this was an April fools prank all along. So, for you ladies out there, you’re going to have hold on a while longer. In the meantime if you’d like to see how this product works, follow the link.

5. GrubHub – Fed up of having to purchase your pet food every week? Look no further! After the American foodservice giants saw continued success catering take-out for people, they’ve now discovered a completely new market. One that Co-founder & President Mike Evans explained was “right next to us the whole time”. So this summer, the company is set to be launching a brand new service called ‘kibblehub’. Kibblehub uses an app that allows you’re pets to make orders for themselves and hopes to revolutionise our pets place in an inter-connective world. This is an innovative and fun prospect that left us with the question, are you ready to train you’re cats to use an iPad? It’s hard enough teaching the parents (personal experience), so what would our pets be like! Here at apt we’d love to see this, If only it wasn’t posted on April fools.

So that brings a close to this year’s apt April Fools award ceremony. We hope you enjoyed it and if your favorites didn’t make the cut, let us know which ones fooled you.
